A Glimpse into a Solarpunk Society

As society continues to develop, our technological advances continue to rapidly improve our ways of life. While this is true, technological advancements used by large-scale corporations have caused adverse effects on our environment and ecosystem. Greenhouse gas emission from unclean resources for energy has caused detrimental damage to our planet. Using technology effectively can help continue to create efficient renewable energy resources.

I wanted to select a topic that can be thoroughly researched. I also wanted to select something that is not only important to me but to others as well. For my thesis, I have depicted a Solarpunk utopian society that utilizes clean, renewable energy sources. The goal of this project is to show what our lives would look like if society changed the usage of technology to benefit people and the planet.

Solarpunk is a subgenre that is defined as an artistic, literary, and activist movement that envisions and works toward a sustainable future. Solarpunk creates a strong connection between nature and community. Typically, this subgenre depicts rural lands that are combined with futuristic elements.

Required Research

In depth art study of multiple environment artists including Naohisa Inoue and Yohichi Nishikawaha, artists who are most famously know for creating the background art in Studio Ghibli movies. Research in environmental preservation to create the semi-realistic inventions that could be used to create clean renewable energy.

Why?

I wanted to create a thesis project that requires studies, both in science and art. I chose this project because not only is preservation of the environment important to me, but important to many others. I also wanted to create a project that will help me with my future career. My goal is to become a concept artist, particularly for a gaming company. Utilizing my skills in research, 3D modeling, and illustration will be useful in the future.
